- Hello.
- Is this the vet group that has the Vietnam Veterans Memorial?
- Yeah.
NOTE: Construction noises can be heard in the background at my location, including hammering, 'Skill Saw', etc.
- I'm sorry, I've got a lot of noise here. Stick with me. Did I get the Lake County Vietnam Vet bunch?
- Yeah, That's us.
- Oh great. I got your number from a guy named [Name Withheld for Privacy Considerations] up at Menamo-nemo-nama, whatever...
- Yeah. I know him - it's Menomonie.
- Yeah - that's it. Anyway, I'm with a vets group and we wanted to find out what we could about your replica. Can you tell me what's the deal?
- Sure. You mean like for getting it to display?
- Yeah, that and whatever else you can tell me about it.
- We get a three thousand dollar donation and all of it goes to homeless vets...
- Can you go slowly? I'm making notes so I can share the information with the other guys in the group.
- ...Sure. We also require a hundred thousand dollars property insurance from the time you pick it up till you return it.
- OK. So, we transport it ourselves?
- Yeah. All it takes is a pickup with a two inch ball. Some people have pulled it with a van, but a pickup is best. It weighs - max - thirty five hundred pounds - not really that much, but MAX. It's all aluminum and only takes an hour to an hour and a half to assemble.
- OK. So, we do the assembly. Is it pretty simple, or do we get instructions or something?
- Yeah. Not like that Wall out of San Jose - a weekend averages twenty thousand dollars - but they transport it, set it up, guard it and stuff like that. But we figure you can do that stuff and save the bucks.
- Wow! They really charge that much?
- Yeah. Twenty Thousand for a weekend. You have to pay for their people to stay somewhere and everything.
- How did you find that out?
- We've talked to other people who have had it and they said it was ridiculously expensive - and we use what little we get for homeless vets.
- Could you tell me how to get in touch with any of those people?
- Well, I haven't actually talked to anyone - it's second or third hand information.
- But, are you SURE it's accurate? About those guys in San Jose?
- Oh, I don't know for sure - you could call them.
- Yeah, I guess I should. Where are you guys located? Where would we have to come to pick it up?
- Waukegan - North of Chicago.
- And do you need an advance deposit or anything?
- You just need to pay in full and give us an insurance certificate thirty days prior to picking it up.
- What can you tell me about the structure? So I can tell the other guys.
- Well, like I said, it's all aluminum, it's laser engraved...
- Hang on, I'm writing it down...laser engraved...so, the names are recessed?
- Yeah. You can make Name Rubbings. It's half-scale, two hundred forty feet long.
- and how high - in the middle?
- Five and a half feet.
- OK, I got that. Two hundred forty long and five and a half high. What can you tell me about it's history? The guys will want to know.
- We originally picked up a half-scale replica that was made out of two by fours and photographs. We put it out for donations. It had served its purpose after seven or eight years use and it was getting pretty well worn...it took several hours to put up...and we decided it was time to design a new one.
- Who came up with the design for the new one?
- My buddy and I spent quite a while with a lot of ideas and we figured it out. We are building another new one this summer. And a second one we're building this summer will be for Jan Scruggs. He checked all of them out and decided ours was the best and asked us to make one for him.
- Wow! That's really something! You mentioned your buddy. What's his name?
- Jim Gave.
- Is that G A V E, like, I "gave it to you"?
- Yeah, that's it.
- OK. I'm not sure what else to ask. Oh yeah. What's scheduling like? For someone to pick a date for when they can get it to display? Could you send us a copy of your schedule - to make it possible to pick dates that are open?
- No, we've been too busy. We don't have anything printed. Homeless Vets is our main thing. It's pretty well booked for this year. Well, there are some openings in July, October and November.
- OK. July, October and November. And, how would we go about getting a date scheduled?
- Just send us some dates you'd like and we can check it out and write up a contract and get it notarized and you're all set. Then, just get us the payment and the insurance thirty days before you pick it up.
- OK. I got that. I can't think of anything else to ask. Is there anything you know of, that I should share with the other guys?
- No, that's about it.
- OK. Thanks a lot for your time.
- Sure. Bye.
m. Bye.
